Children are born ready to learn.
To become eager learners, children need skills in four key areas:
- language and literacy skills - talking, reading
aloud and singing
- Thinking skills – counting, sorting, exploring, problem solving
- Self-control – cooperating and getting along with others, coping with frustration
- Self-confidence – getting along with others, sharing, making friends
Children learn best through everyday experiences with the people they love and trust and
when learning is fun.
A child’s health, relationships and experiences during the early years greatly influence how
the child’s brain grows. To give your child the best start . . .
- Teach your child about the importance of
nutritious meals, good hygiene, and adequate rest and exercise;
- Keep your child healthy and safe with regular
checkups and immunizations and know the signs of illness and/or special needs;
- Talk with your child;
- Read to your child;
- Sing and have fun with your child;
- Nurture your child, making your child feel loved, secure and competent.

formed at birth. During the first three years, trillions of connections between
brain cells are being made.
