The Early Years: help your child develop a lifetime love of learning
Here is some basic information to keep in mind as you help your child develop a love of learning.
- Children learn better when they are healthy and well-rested.
- Is my child getting enough sleep?
- Is my child getting medical and dental checkups and necessary immunizations?
- Is my child eating a healthy diet?
- Is my child getting enough exercise?
- Children leam everywhere.
- At home, you can teach your children the names and uses of things, like the furniture, the refrigerator, and the telephone.
- In the community, you can talk to them about things like cars, streets, stores, and the weather.
- They will be learning important language skills no matter what language you are speaking, so you can do these
activities in whatever language(s) is/are most comfortable for you.
- Children need a good learning environment.
- Take your children to the library.
- Read books with them.
- Talk and sing with them, even when they are very young.
- Limit the amount of time they watch television or use the computer – for 2-3 year olds, a reasonable limit is 30-60 minutes per day.
- Limit the type of television programs they watch to those programs which encourage the fun of learning, like “Sesame Street” or “Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?”
- Watch television with your child and extend the learning by talking about what your child is viewing and how
it connects to the real world.
- Children need a positive attitude toward school.
- Children leam attitudes from their parents. When you are involved in your children's education, your children realize the importance and fun of learning, which results in a love of learning for a lifetime.
- Share your dreams and high expectations for your child.
- Perhaps you dream of your child finishing high school or attending college.
- Begin sharing your dreams with your child at a very young age and often.
