Kindergarten Readiness
Here are some of the ways to help you determine your child’s readiness for kindergarten.
Speech
- pronounces words clearly
- talks without stuttering
- does not sound hoarse or nasal
- varies voice appropriately
Language
- understands concepts of color, size, time, etc.
- demonstrates understanding of spoken instructions
- speaks in sentences of at least five or six words in length
- expressive language is easy to understand
Intellectual
- says first and last name
- can match shapes, symbols, colors and patterns
- follows two-step direction
- relates experiences freely
- retells simple stories
- memorizes simple rhymes, finger plays
- sings songs with class and alone
- responds to stories – claps, chants
- verbalizes stories when using picture books
- holds book upright, turns pages front to back
- represents or expresses ideas with drawings
Social and Emotional
- displays appropriate concern for success
- exhibits self-control
- responds well to adults
- cooperates well in group activities
- interacts well with peers
- displays appropriate behavior in formal settings
Physical / Health
- is active and alert
- can catch a self-dropped ball two or three times
- can stand on right foot for ten seconds
- can skip or gallop while weaving through five to eight obstacles
- can kick a ball forward a minimum of ten feet
- can copy designs such as a square and a triangle
- shows a definite left or right-hand preference
